Strategic Design

Marco Steinberg is Strategic Design Director at the Finnish Innovation Fund (Sitra) where he lead’s the Fund’s capability to apply design to help shape strategic improvements. Current initiatives include Helsinki Design Lab, a global initiative to help address today’s large scale strategic redesign & transformation needs; and overseeing the design of Low2No, a transitional strategy to create national carbon free urban development in Finland through the implementation of a large scale development project in downtown Helsinki.

Prior to Sitra, Steinberg served (1999-2009) as a Professor at the Harvard Design School where hiswork focused on developing strategic design processes that enable more effective solutions to complex societal challenges.  He was the Principal Investigator of the Stroke Pathways project: a strategic redesign of the stroke care delivery system, aimed at identifying strategic improvements in care through a systemic, inception to implementation, model. His work also included developing innovative organizational approaches to complex problem-solving and improved competitiveness through design. His research has extensively integrated with industry and government and he is the author and contributor to numerous books.

            The lectures will seek to address these fundamental questions by examining the evolution of design from the birth and rise of Industrial design to today’s changing landscape of challenges and opportunities. One of the primary premises of the course is that the value of design has shifted from an object oriented endeavor to a strategic planning oriented endeavor.

Strategic Design

            The second lecture will explore design within today’s changing global context. In particular it will introduce the idea of Strategic Design: leveraging design to help solve society’s ’big picture problems’. We will focus on a series of case studies to bring specificity and clear examples of how design helps create a tipping point in decision making, systemic issues: Stroke Pathways Project will explore system design opportunities in Healthcare (a Harvard University project) and Low2No will explore strategic design in sustainable development focused on transforming our cities to carbon neutrality, but operating at a national scale.
