From Number Theory to Black Holes

A famous mystery of number theory that lasted for over 80 years was the true meaning of the "mock theta functions" that were introduced without a formal lecture in the letter Ramanujan sent to Hardy shortly before his death in 1920. It was resolved in 2002 by Sander Zwegers, who showed that these functions belong to a new class of automorphic objects which are now called "mock modular forms". This new class has already found a surprising number of applications in combinatorics, group theory (representations of the Mathieu group M_24) and mathematical physics (BPS state counting for quantum black holes).  The talk will give a survey of some of these interconnections
